THE POWER OF ISLAND MYTHOLOGIES
History teaches the world that small islands such as Palau were discovered by seafarers with tales of exotic vision of paradise clouded with cannibalism and savagery thus branding our world inhabited by uncivilized people. But time have chronicled a different story when our children will recognize the value of our heritage and appreciate our island world that it was not the islands that were lost but the sea travelers themselves who it fact drifted off-course wandering aimlessly throughout the vast oceanic blue sea.
The islands are a world onto themselves rich in distinctive and diverse culture that rivals many nations a thousand times over. The islands are home not only to a unique people but civilized islanders in a world perspective to the meaning of civilization. The people of Palau have evolved over thousands of years in tradition and culture that defined their way of life through mythological narratives handed down throughout the generations by word of mouth.
Every civilization on Earth has told mythic stories to express its aspirations, achievements and the deeper meaning of life and Palau is not lost in this context. From the earliest of times, myths have excited and inspired us because the stories serve to describe the human experience throughout our existence.
Palauan myths show us what we are capable of as individuals. Palauan legends have come to represent the great mythic stories of our time beginning and ending with the fulfillment of a spiritual journey into our heritage handed down through millennium by our Palauan ancestor… a journey that speaks to the modern children of our age.
Like many of the people on this planet,… our village mythologies is our heritage that identifies us in a changing world and therefore it is a duty and an obligation for any Palauans to pass our stories, The Palauan Legends, on to future generations, in any forms.
